- The "Year
2000" Problem: A Primer on Coming Litigation The "Year 2000 Problem" is
based upon computer hardware and software using two
digits instead of four to identify the year. While one
might expect the Year 2000 to be "00" in
computer-ese, in fact, "00" is read as 1900.
Thus when a computer with two-digit date coding
encounters "00", it may cause computation
errors or crash the system. To fix the problem will
likely cost about six hundred billion dollars. This
article examines the problems, solutions as well as
discusses the coming litigation issues.
